A month out of Egypt the people are hungry and say so, loudly. In the evening quails cover the camp; in the morning there is a small round thing on the ground, and nobody knows what it is — which is where the name comes from. Manna in the Wilderness makes a grid of Exodus 16.
The rules attached to it are the interesting part: an omer for every man, none kept till morning except before the sabbath, and twice as much gathered on the sixth day. The closing verse is the morning it first appears.
